The lacrosse community in Saskatchewan and beyond is mourning the loss of Al Luciuk, a respected leader, educator, and lifelong advocate for the growth of field lacrosse. Known widely for his dedication to developing the game at every level, Luciuk’s passing marks the end of an era for the sport he helped shape across local, provincial, national, and international stages.
Al Luciuk was best known as a true builder of field lacrosse in Saskatchewan. His influence extended far beyond coaching, as he worked tirelessly to grow participation, develop programs, and mentor athletes and coaches throughout his career. Drawing on his background as a professional teacher, he brought a structured, thoughtful, and educational approach to the sport, helping players not only improve their skills but also understand the values of teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship.
One of his most notable contributions was his long-standing leadership with the Saskatoon Field Lacrosse Association, where he served as president for 15 years. During his tenure, he played a critical role in expanding opportunities for players and strengthening the foundation of lacrosse within the region. His leadership helped establish a strong community presence for the sport in Saskatoon and surrounding areas.
Luciuk’s involvement in lacrosse also extended to the provincial level, where he dedicated 15 years as a player, coach, and team captain with Saskatchewan’s Senior Men’s Provincial Teams. His achievements with these teams were remarkable, including six national championships—two Ross Cups and four Victory Trophies. His leadership on and off the field contributed significantly to Saskatchewan’s success in national competition.
As a coach for the Junior Men’s Provincial Teams, Luciuk continued to demonstrate his ability to develop talent and guide teams to success. Under his leadership, the teams earned two silver medals and nine bronze medals, showcasing consistent performance at a high level of competition. His coaching philosophy emphasized both athletic excellence and personal development, leaving a lasting impression on the players he mentored.
In high school lacrosse, Luciuk’s impact was equally impressive. Coaching the Scorpion Lacrosse and Sturgis Trojan Lacrosse teams, he led his teams to five consecutive Provincial High School U19 Championships and a total of 12 Provincial U19 Championship titles. His programs were instrumental in developing young athletes, many of whom went on to compete at higher levels of the sport. Notably, 28 of his athletes advanced to NCAA programs across Division I, II, III, and collegiate club levels.
Luciuk’s contributions were not limited to coaching and administration. He also served in leadership roles within the broader lacrosse community, including as Men’s Field Sector Chairperson and as president and lifetime member of the Saskatchewan Lacrosse Association. His dedication helped shape policies, programs, and opportunities that benefited players across the province.
On the international stage, Luciuk represented Canada in significant capacities. He served as assistant manager for the Canadian Men’s U19 National Team, which earned a silver medal at the World Championships in Burnaby, British Columbia. He also contributed as an assistant coach for the Canadian Men’s U19 National Team, which secured another silver medal at the World Championships in Towson, Maryland. His involvement at this level reflected the respect he earned within the global lacrosse community.
In addition to his coaching and leadership roles, Luciuk contributed to the development of the sport through educational materials and presentations. He authored several manuals for the Canadian Lacrosse Association and presented at the US Lacrosse Convention, sharing his knowledge and experience with a wider audience of coaches and administrators.
Al Luciuk’s legacy is defined by his unwavering commitment to growing lacrosse and supporting those involved in the game. His influence is deeply embedded in the fabric of Saskatchewan lacrosse, where his name is synonymous with leadership, development, and excellence.
He will be remembered not only for his achievements but also for his passion, dedication, and the countless individuals he inspired throughout his life. His impact will continue to be felt through the players he coached, the programs he built, and the community he helped strengthen.
May Al Luciuk rest in peace.
